Once you have made it through the interview for executive positions you want, you are going to have to really do some hard work, salary negotiation.This is a major step in the process of getting a new job and messing this up is something that will follow you for some time.
The company is going to be trying to pay you as little as they can for your work while you need to prove you deserve what you want to get. You are going to need to be comfortable talking about all of your business skills and why you are worth more. You need to sell them on how great you were in your former executive positions and all the people you know in the industry that you can call on as well as any special skills and traits you have that make you worth more than others.
Try to know the typical pay for this job before you ever go to the negotiation table. A quick search on the Internet may help you find a list of what other executive positions that are like this one are paying currently.
You need to think outside of the box as well. It may not be just cash that you should be considering when thinking of what your salary will be and what you want from the company as your pay. Look into the company to see if you can find any of the other types of perks and benefits they may offer those who are in executive positions within the company that you may be able to get. Some of these things include stock options, extra benefits, the use of memberships to clubs and organizations, or even the use of company vehicles and planes if they have them.These all add up as part of a complete compensation package even though they are not specific cash numbers.
If you know they have a lot of those perks for executive positions, you should make a list of which ones are highest on your wish list and make sure to remember to toss those in when you are at the negotiation table. You may only be able to choose a few of the perks they have to offer as the negotiations go back and forth, so make sure you know your priorities and stick to your guns on those to make sure you get them.
There are many levels when it comes to negotiating salaries for executive positions. If you know what you want going into negotiations you have a better chance of getting it.
